Projects — Tanjung Priok

TANJUNG PRIOK, NORTH JAKARTA

YE Water Program has been working in this community for 4 years.

"Now people are very enthusiastic in planting and having plants as much as they can. It's their own initiative to have plants, although they did not involve in planting activity on Earth Day, but they became interested to have plants since they neighbors have plants." –Pak Haris

Current YE Water Programs:

Hygiene
Took place in Ibu Ross' house, we teach 8-12 years old children about health and hygiene. We put hand washing station in the location to do practical the important of hand washing. We plan to implement PHP manual in this location this year as well.

Clean Water Program
Since we haven't done sequel campaign ini this area, therefore not many Air Rahmat, SODIS, PUR and Ceramic Filter users in her. Yet, according our monitoring we've done, Tanjung Priok has the highest number in SODIS user which is 9 user, compare to another locations we serve.

Sanitation
Pak Haris is the pioneer for solid waste management in this area. He has produced and exported to Monsoon many of his recycled products made from plastic garbage , i.e. trash bin, beauty case, pencil case, etc. Now he is recruiting new members as students and re-set out his workshop and sewing machines.

Flood Emergency Management
Floods affected this community. In February 2008, we distributed 257 emergency kits to the flood victim.

LIVING CONDITIONS

This area we serve is known as Kampung Beting, Tanah Merah (Red Soil), 4.5 ha wide, so called because this area was piled up with the red soil to cover the garbage before it's developed as residency.   This dense area is right behind the huge Islamic Center, North Jakarta and is divided into 9 Rts (areas).

POPULATION

In total, the population reaches more than 1000 people in about 800 households. But there is still no current data about population since the new local leader (RW) was elected. People from all over Indonesia stay in this location and the people keep moving in and out

INCOME

People do various kinds of work, mostly laborer. Others work as driver, cleaning service, ojek driver, becak driver, street singer, etc. The wives usually help as washing labor or garment labor. Some kids also work to help their parents as street singer. On average, their income is about Rp 600,000 - Rp 800,000/ month

WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) FACILITIES

Toilets: there has been some progress in toilet facilities since some people have built a private latrine in their house. They used to defecate in the gutter or pack it in a plastic bag and throw it away somewhere. Now, each rental house has at least one latrine.
Water: most of them use the water from PAM (water company) for bathing, drinking, and washing. They pay Rp 50,000/month. The others without PAM supply use the well water. As its condition is not very good they use it only for bathing and washing. Some wells have dirty salty water. For drinking they also buy the water pikul ( 2 jerry cans) for Rps 2,000.   Some are regular users of Air Rahmat (chlorinator) . Some also implement SODIS like Bu Yuli and Bu Kirno. There are also the ceramic filter users like Pak Haris.   But, still many of them boil the water or buy the galon water.
Trash: since this area is illegal, they don't have any access for garbage service. They throw garbage somewhere and there is no garbage truck will pick it up.

HEALTH / INCIDENCE OF DISEASE / HEALTH SERVICES

The cases of diarrhea always come after the flood and also the kutu air ( happens because their feet are soaked in the water for a long time). Bad water also causes skin itchiness for some people. There are also cases of dengue (caused by mosquitoes). There is a catholic foundation, Magdalena Group, operating for baby nutrition and pregnant women. Sometimes this organization provides general health service with the doctors from St. Carolus Hospital.   Some poor families have special health insurance from government, ASKESKIN/ Asuransi Kesehatan Masyarakat Miskin (Health Insurance for Poor People), so that they can have free medical care from Puskesmas and state hospital.

EDUCATION

About 25% kids dropped out from school because of financial reason. Magdalena group also provides free Kindergarten and Bimbel/Bimbingan Belajar (after school lesson) for elementary and junior high students.

FLOOD IMPACTS

It is very poor in the rainy season or when the flood comes. Because this area does not have good drainage channel and government does not pay attention due to the illegality of this area. Community has to dig the drainage channel themselves so that the water can flow out of their houses.

Other Organizations

Beside YE water Program and Magdalena Group there is a foundation, Yayasan Kyai Haji Djoyohadikusumo (YKHD), operated individually by Ricardo to give scholarship to students.

"It is easier and much cheaper to use Air Rahmat rather than boiling water." –Ibu Rini
