YE Water Program provides education to 6 slum communities in Jakarta to build capacity and empower families to improve their own water, hygiene, and sanitation condition. Our communities are located in Bintaro Baru, Bintaro Lama, Cilincing, Pulo Kandang, Tanjung Priok, and Teluk Gong.
YE Water Program operates 4 programs:
1. Public Health Promotion Program: Our creative 16-week Public Heath Promotion education program targets children, integrating hygiene and environmental sanitation activities into constructive applications. Pre and post-program evaluation ensures a focus on achieving real outcomes in changing the behaviors and improving the health of the children.
2. In our Clean Water Program , we have provided training on a range of low cost point-of-use drinking water quality treatment alternatives to our communities. Water quality monitoring of chlorination (Air Rahmat and PuR), solar water disinfection (SODIS) and ceramic water filters is currently being undertaken in an action research approach with our communities to ensure families have access to clean drinking water.
We are also working with communities to construct rainwater collection systems using plastic bottles as first flush devices. Beneficiaries are trained to construct their own systems, which removes labor and maintenance costs while securing stakeholder involvement.
3. In our Improved Sanitation Program we train our communities in solid waste recycling including making marketable products, and composting organic waste for use in planting edible and attractive plants. In this way we hope to reduce the health effects of stagnant water and flooding caused by solid waste blockages at the same time as increasing income.
4. Our Flood Emergency Management Program operates during the rainy season (February - April) when floods inundate our disadvantaged communities, causing health problems and loss of what little property they have. We conduct training programs in emergency coordination and also provide emergency hygiene kits which will last a family of 5 for about one week. All of our kits are produced from donations from our supporters.
Community motivation and participation are fundamental to progress community development objectives. Through regular community committee meetings, children's classes, adult training workshops and large community events we have built relationships which allow us to tackle concerns of highest priority to our communities.
